Peripheral or Central Route Advertisements? What causes more impact to people? Does the way they present the advertisements encourage more people to buy their products? Or will it be the opposite?

I chose 2 commercials on TV that I think used the Peripheral and Central Route to try to persuade people to buy the product.

Let me start by presenting the advertisement that used the Peripheral Route. I think that the advertisement of Fita that portrayed an old lady who wanted some food and there was a teenager eating a fita. Instead of giving the last piece to the lady, he gave her half of the piece. The old woman turned out to be a beautiful fairy and granted the boy 1 wish. The boy said these famous line “sports car, yung red”, then the fairy gave him half of the sports car.

As we can see, the presentation of the advertisement did not really emphasize the product. It led the audience to focus on something different. But this really helped people remember the product. As a result, the lines “sports car! yung red” became very popular to Filipinos. It changed the attitude of Filipinos towards sharing and giving. ^_^

The advertisement of Wyeth about their milk which is “PROMIL” is my example of an advertisement that used the Central Route to convince the consumers to buy their product. The advertisement presented many innovations in their product since the 1950′s. They presented the nutrients added until the present year. If I remember it correctly, the last nutrient is “lutein” which improves eyesight. The overall impact of this commercial to audiences is boring.

This shows the Central Route of persuading other people because it presented many facts to persuade that their product is the best. Scientific facts were presented, even the history of the milk. The effect of this to people can be positive or negative. Either they will buy the products because they were amused to see what it can do to their babies or become “scared” to buy it because of too many vitamins and minerals. Personally, I wouldn’t want to buy the milk because I think it will cause more harm than good for babies.

These are my opinions about the use of peripheral and central routes in commercials. What is the best? That is for YOU to decide. ^_^

Dear You-Know-Who,

I have experienced what is happening in your life right now. I understand that it is not a good feeling. Overprotective parents, stupid siblings, being treated as a child- name it. These are the reasons why teenagers go nuts. As a concerned citizen, I would really like to help you handle the situation. I hope that my pieces of advice would help you understand what you are going through.

First of all, let us start with the overprotective parents. You are their child, of course they care for you. Sometimes, their “love” becomes so irritating and it really gets on your nerves. The solution to this is simple. Talk to them, in a nice manner of course. You know they will understand. Make them understand that you are not a child anymore, but be careful in your choice of words and tone of voice. They might interpret it with another meaning. Remember that “meanings are in people, not in words”. They will surely understand you because they love you. A conversation over dinner won’t do you any harm. Open the topic slowly and then give your reasons why you don’t like them to be overprotective. Tell them the reason why you smoke and make them understand. You don’t have to stop smoking if you really don’t want to, but be sure that your family will understand.

With regards to your sister, let me share this quote that I read from a book, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” You say that your sister was an angel before you came back. Your stay at home, eating with your parents on time may be one reason why she is behaving that way. Again, talk to her. Any problem can be solved by a good communication.

Regarding your course, you are left with no choice. Your father told you it is for your own good. Make your dad understand that you love what you are doing. You love it and you know you will excel if you continue with that course.

Change the rules of the game. You have control over it. Remember, every action that you or one of your family members do will affect everyone in the family. Even if your parents will not change, you can change your interpretations on what they are doing. If you can do this, then you will not bear a grudge against your family.

I hope what I said can help you understand and ease your pain. You can do it. Just believe in yourself. Godbless.

                                                                                                                                Yours truly,

                                                                                                                                 Ged

Shelley and Jim have been dating very seriously for about six months. From the beginning of the relationship, Jim has known that Shelley has kept a private diary that he has never shown anyone. At first, he wasn’t too interested in this activity, but as hey have drawn closer, he has become intrigued by her personal writings. Yet he never he asks if she would share her prose with him, she responds that she needs secret place to work out her thoughts and emotions. In conversation, she never holds back from him, freely self-disclosing about herself and their relationship, but the diary remains all her own, and Jim is perplexed, even disturbed by this. The more interest he shows in her private writings, the more adamant about her privacy she becomes. What should they do?

Dear Jim,

How are you? I read about your situation with Shelley and to tell you honestly, I really like to help you. I will give you some hints in how to handle your relationship.

Let me start by saying that a relationship is a never-ending tug-of-war between the couple. First you have to understand that each of you have differences and secrets that you don’t want to share with other people. You have to respect that. You’ve been talking to her but you never had the courage to ask her about that diary. That causes tension in you and believe it or not, you are now jealous of that diary. If she says that she doesn’t want you to read that diary, then respect that. You have to trust her Jim. Besides, that diary can be a way to strentghen your relationship with her. Who knows, maybe you’re the topic of that diary. Remember, if there are no opposing forces that are present in your relationship, then your relationship will be boring, right? Without that diary, then there will be no mystery in your relationship with her. That mystery can spice up your relationship.

Talk to her Jim. Tell her what you really want to say. Dialogues are very helpful in bridging the gaps between you. She may not be able to change because I said earlier, relationships are made up of opposite forces. Of course, you can’t be sure if she will tell you what is in that diary, but at least, you can slowly earn her trust. Acceptance is the key Jim. Don’t be afraid to take the risk of asking her about that diary. Never do anything that you will regret in the end. The diary can either be the reason for you to be closer to her or if you continue to act like that, it might lead to your break-up with Shelley.

Think about it Jim. I hope my pieces of advice help you in what you are going through.

                                                                                                                              Till then,

                                                                                                                              Ged

The communication act that I chose for further research is the adaptation of a language. For example, a person that doesn’t know the Visayan language from Manila or any part of the country will come here to Mindanao. When he speaks to a person from here, one of the two will “adapt” to the other’s language. Why is this so? What is the basis for us to know who will adapt to the language?

As a student in the University of the Philippines in Mindanao, I am very curious about communication. People that I know who have Tagalog as their first language still speak Tagalog when talking to other students and most of the time, I observed that the people they talk to answer them back in Tagalog. Is there a tendency that they will adapt to the Visayan language?

I chose this topic because this communication act can be easily observed anywhere in the campus. Plus, I know some people who I can interview regarding their thoughts about the adaptation of the language. This would make the job easier for me. ^_^

When I enrolled in UP Mindanao, I met students from different parts of the Philippines. We speak different languages and dialects- Bisaya, Ilokano, Ilonggo, Tagalog. Some of us have Tagalog as their first language, some are Ilonggo, and most of the people that I know are Bisaya.

What I’m curious about is why, when there are two people who speak different languages, one of the two will adapt to the others’ language. For example, my friend Archie is from Manila. He enrolled in UP Mindanao not knowing a single visayan word. One thing that I noticed is when I talk to him, instead of talking to him in Bisaya, I speak Tagalog. He is Mindanao, of course, it is expected that he learns the language (bisaya) and speak it. But why do I speak tagalog when I’m talking to him? Why can’t I just speak bisaya and he speak tagalog while understanding each other and know what we mean? Is this reaction/adaptation normal?

By learning more communication theories, I can further explain the reasons about this communication act.
